About
In 1890, Yellowstone photographer Frank Jay Haynes started publishing the “Haynes Guidebook” as a guide for visitors traveling through and within Yellowstone National Park. These guidebooks were published nearly every year from 1890 to 1967 and provide a unique look into the history of Yellowstone.
Using the “Haynes Guidebooks,” Yellowstone visitors could reference travel and road logs, maps, and camping information to plan their trip, and information about wildlife, geology, history, and geothermal features to enhance their Yellowstone experience.
Although the Haynes guides were not the first guidebooks published about Yellowstone, this collection remains the longest running. The Yellowstone Research Library has at least one copy of every year that the “Haynes Guidebook” was printed.
This collection serves as an invaluable primary source on the history of Yellowstone National Park and allows researchers to track changes like prices, roads, opening/closing dates across decades.
