Public Lands
Greater Yellowstone Land Ownership map; November 1991
About
Including the 2.2 million acres that comprise the national park, the Yellowstone region contains numerous areas of federally protected public lands. Public lands are owned and managed by the government to be used for conservation, recreation, resource management, and other various uses. Management of federal public lands is divided between four government agencies:
Public lands are classified into categories that determine which agency is responsible for their management. For example, National Parks, National Monuments, National Historic Sites (and more) fall under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, National Forests under the U.S. Forest Service, and National Wildlife Refuges under the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
